Members driving into the Sportsmen's Lodge parking lot for the "Shotgun Tom" Kelly celebrity luncheon on March 27 were thrilled to see an actual antique Buick used in the TV series "Highway Patrol" on display with our honoree standing beside it. Inside the lodge, old friends and well-wishers of "Shotgun Tom" Kelly met in the green room prior to the afternoon's festivities. Here dais members Harold Greene, former Channels 7 and 2 news anchor, and Jhani Kaye, one of LA's most influential radio program directors, now retired, chatted with Don Barrett and his wife Cherie. Don is considered the foremost LA radio personality expert who has kept radio professionals and fans informed for decades through his Website, www.laradio.com, and his definitive books on the subject. It was a time to renew acquaintances in the green room before entering Sportsmen's Lodge Empire Room for PPB's "Shotgun Tom" Kelly celebrity luncheon. A good time was obviously being had by, left to right: Lou Waters, Harold Greene, Jhani Kaye, PPB Past President Chuck Southcott, the day's honoree and Robert David Hall. Waters, Greene, Kaye and Hall later entertained luncheoners with stories about their trooper-hat-wearing old friend. |
Past President Chuck Southcott inducted long-time PPB member Wink Martindale into the Diamond Circle, citing his long list of broadcasting accomplishments, including numerous TV game shows. Chairman of the Board Jeanne DeVivier Brown listened as Wink told some of his humorous adventures, and then he mentioned how one never knows the impact we broadcasters have on individual audience members. He cited a devoted viewer of "Tic-Tac-Dough," who then became a contestant on the show. Sadly, years later he was the pilot of the ill-fated American Airlines plane forced to fly into the Pentagon on 9/11. (Don King photo)

What would a Southern California top-rated radio disc jockey be without a bobble-head doll in his likeness? Well, "Shotgun Tom" has one, but it's the possession of Kerri Kasem, talk radio/TV host and daughter of the late, great Casey Kasem. She swore she is never without her "prized possession," and went on to amuse attendees with several humorous "Shotgun Tom" stories. (David Keeler photo) |

President Chuck Street promised luncheon guests there would be a surprise, and this was it: Emulating the guest of honor's iconic "Shotgun Tom" trooper hat, our president presented each dais member with a close replica, although he did confess they were made in China. "Shotgun Tom" Kelly was ever so gracious in accepting the Art Gilmore Career Achievement Award from President Street. He remembered fondly knowing this great
"Red Skelton Show" announcer, the narrator of "Highway Patrol," hundreds of Warner Brothers movie trailers and so many other radio and TV shows. He said he would proudly display this beautiful PPB award with Art's name on it.
