Two celebrity entertainers and long-time PPB members, Jamie Farr and Jo Anne Worley, greeted pioneer TV producer George Sunga prior to him being inducted into PPB's Diamond Circle at the Carl Reiner luncheon. As might be expected, the selection of Carl Reiner to receive the coveted Art Gilmore Career Achievement Award September 12 brought out a large, enthusiastic membership to salute the legendary funnyman. More than 300 filled the Empire Ballroom at Sportsmen's Lodge for the luncheon. (Don King photo) |
Following lunch and a video review of Carl Reiner's early TV appearances (including some fantastic tap dancing routines), President Chuck Street turned the program over to Tom Bergeron, who brought the PPB honoree onto the stage. (David Keeler photo) |
Our honoree came prepared to wear a necktie if that was the "uniform of the day" among PPB members and guests. He took a show of hands and the no tie contingent won by a landslide. Carl then handed his tie back to Tom Bergeron. (David Keeler photo) |
In a departure from the usual PPB celebrity luncheon format, Carl requested that there be no dais of his friends (he said he didn't want to impose on them), but agreed to have a conversation on stage with his long-time friend, Tom Bergeron. The two sat on high chairs as Tom led Carl through an amusing recollection of highlights in the life of this true entertainment icon. (Don King photo) |
PPB Board member "Shotgun Tom" Kelly exclaims: "I got mine!" He was referring to a page from Carl Reiner's latest book with Carl's autograph on it. During the program, our honoree had explained that his publisher wouldn't approve him giving all 300+ attendees a copy of his book, so he spent the morning autographing each page of one and passed the book into the audience with instructions for everyone to tear out just one page with his autograph. There was a lot of page tearing going on after the successful luncheon. (David Keeler photo) |
